Therapy Dog Workshop (Pet Partners Handler Course)

The successful completion of a Pet Partners Therapy Dog Handler Course is required to become a registered Pet Partners Therapy Dog Team. Pet Partners highly recommends "in-person" workshops over online courses. Unlike online courses, our workshops are hands-on and provide unique opportunities for attendees to practice therapy visits with Registered Pet Partners Therapy Dogs, and ask questions of experienced therapy dog teams. Our workshops also include simulated run-throughs of the Pet Partners Therapy Team Evaluation Test. In fact, Pet Partners has found that those who complete an instructor-led workshop are more likely to pass their real Therapy Team Evaluation Test on the first attempt.

Conducted by licensed Pet Partners instructors, our workshops teach you the skills necessary to safely visit with your dog in environments such as hospitals, classrooms, libraries, elder care facilities, psychiatric facilities, correctional facilities, and more.

Among other things, our workshops cover:

  • Preparing yourself and your dog for visits
  • Policies and procedures of Therapy Dog visits
  • Identifying and decreasing stress in your dog
  • Dog health and safety
  • Special needs of specific therapy client groups
  • How to interact with different types of people
  • Facility health and safety codes
  • Patient confidentiality

Upon successful completion of our workshop, you will receive a Certificate of Completion and the Registration Packet for becoming a Registered Pet Partners Therapy Dog Team.

Advanced Obedience Workshop

This workshop is for dogs that already have experience in obedience training, and is geared toward improving a dog's reliability when the dog is asked to perform commands and stay on task. Emphasis is placed on behaviors that are practical and useful in everyday life, such as Heel and Stay. The workshop is conducted in a highly distracting environment.

To ensure you and your dog get the most of this workshop, below are prerequisites for the workshop:

  • Your dog must be potty-trained.
  • While your dog can be interested, curious, excited, or nervous to meet other dogs and people, your dog must not be aggressive toward other dogs or people.
  • Your dog must know what Heel means. He/she does not have to be perfect, but does need to know what is expected of him/her when you issue your Heel command.
  • Your dog must know what Stay means. Again, he/she does not need to be perfect, but does need to know what is expected of him/her when you issue your Stay command.
